Spider-Man 3

The third instalment to the popular super-hero saga is set to take the story in a much darker direction than the previous two films have, with the will they / wont they relationship of Peter Parker and Sarah-Jane replaced with the turmoil that Parker is going through after being taken over by an alien symbiote that is decidedly less caring than Spider-Man.

While exact details of the plot aren’t yet known, it’s a fair bet that the story will inevitably include Spider-Man doing some bad deeds, and then suffering the mental anguish after realising just what he has done. Of course we could be wrong on this…

What is known about the plot is that at some point good old Spidey gets the upper hand and rips the symbiote from his body, however the thing doesn’t die, and it finds a new, and more willing host in the form of Eddie Brock Jnr, whom just happens to have a bit of hatred harboured towards our favourite web-slinger. The result of this merger is the infamous Venom – a dark and decidedly evil creature, trouble will no doubt ensue.

According to reports, Spider-Man director Sam Raimi was originally against the idea of the inclusion of Venom in the film, as he felt that he lacked ‘humanity’ – it was Marvel producer Avi Arad who convinced him to change his mind, swayed in no small part by the strong following among fans of the comics that Venom has.

Venom isn’t the only foe that Spiderman will face in the film, as Sandman makes a major appearance, reportedly being the main villain in the movie. Thomas Haden Church is the actor taking on the role, helped in no small part by the special effects that frequently see his character making use of his sand-inspired abilities, such as getting into people’s sandwiches, shoes and ‘uncomfortable’ places… ok, so maybe he’ll be a tad more sinister than that.

Anticipation for the film is running high, and going by the quality of the previous films, fans of the franchise shouldn’t be disappointed – and with it having a huge budget of around $250 million, it seems as though no expense will be spared in its creation.
